Join Positive Legacy in Central Vallarta for a day of giving back, fun and celebration!
Join Positive Legacy at the Casa de la Cultura in the town of Puerto Morelos for a day of giving back, fun and celebration!
We have planned an action-packed day of discovery, cultural connections, service work, musical celebrations & local cuisine!
This year we have awarded grants to multiple groups that are doing amazing work in Puerto Morelos. Our main grant will be given to our partner organization Healthyreefs.org. They are supporting a king crab production project in which the local marine scientists are growing king crabs to be released into the offshore reefs. The local scientists have found the king crab to be an invaluable resource to the reef as they eat the harmful algae that grows on the corals. Increasing the crabs' populations is also keeping them from becoming an endangered species as the local fishermen have decimated their populations over the last few decades.
Because there was not enough community service work for us to do at the crab growing facilities we decided to help another local organization in need. However, Healthy Reefs will be onsite with us and look forward to sharing a small demonstration of their work and have us help them build some of the items they will be using in their project.
For the community service part of our day, we will be going to the Casa de la Cultura which is the oldest community center in Puerto Morelos. The facility is maintained by community donations and volunteers. They offer classes & workshops of all kinds for locals and tourists; most are free or at low cost for those in need.
This will be the 2nd time Positive Legacy has supported the Casa de la Cultura with community development grants and “Day of Service” volunteer labor. In 2014 we helped build & stock a cafeteria space so they would be able to prepare food on site as well as offer a coffee shop-like space, we also helped buy chairs and tables for presentations, added fresh paint to most of the facility, built the stage and put up a shade cloth overhead.
Since our last visit, weather and general use has deteriorated many of their facilities. A recently built neighboring construction project has also left debris and destroyed landscaping which has led to flooding issues. The Casa de la Cultura has asked us to donate funds and labor to help them clean up the site by doing much needed drainage ditch and building structure repair work, refreshing the landscaping, painting the walls and stage area as well as installing a new air conditioning system.
During the Day of Service on Saturday December 13th, we will take approximately 50 of the String & Sol guests who choose to join us, to reinvigorate the buildings with fresh paint, refurbish the landscaping, help build coral growing structures with Healthy Reefs and more!
After we put in a bit of work we will be treated to the live music of the local band Galactica Deep Roots presenting songs from their upcoming album with Tim Carbone! We will also have an authentic Mexican lunch and drinks while you enjoy the live music and chat with your new local friends.
We will board the bus back by 1:45 in order to get to the resort by 2pm in time for everyone to refresh for the Yonder Mountain pool side set and another evening of fantastic music on the beach.
Activities for the day will include:
• Cleaning vegetation & debris
• Painting school & murals
• Building crab enclosures
• Landscaping & grounds repair
• Lunch & live local music
Ticket Cost:
$100 in advance
$125 at the resort (if available)
*The revenue from ticket sales help to offset the costs associated with the Day of Service, including supplies and materials, transportation, food, payments for local cooks and musicians, sponsoring less fortunate kids and families to celebrate with us, etc.
