Join Positive Legacy at Xcacel Beach for a Day of Service and ecological conservation! The beautiful beach is one of the only remaining undeveloped beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula which turtles come to nest every year.

Xcacel focuses on the preservation of nesting grounds for sea turtles of the Caribbean. The park is open to the public for a fee for the months of December to April and closed for hatching season from May to November.

In July 2019, Positive Legacy provided a $20,000 grant to the Sanctuary for their housing project. The Phase One project will consist of building a permanent second story structure on to the existing park office to house volunteers throughout the hatching season, approximately 28 individuals. The volunteers assess the health of the mothers, collect data on tags and size, date and protect the nests throughout the night. Nests typically take two months to hatch and when they do, the volunteers help transfer the baby sea turtles from the nest closer to the ocean. In addition to the volunteer housing, we will remodel of the existing restrooms in conjunction with replacing the plumbing infrastructure to the septic system to adequately treat the waste the park generates throughout the year.

We are excited to be returning to the park for a 2nd year of Day of Service activities! We will spend the morning working on various projects in conjunction with 3 additions Days of Service events in 2020. Our projects include; removing invasive plants, laying the groundwork for the new Xcacel Welcome Center and cleaning up the beach, to name a few. After completing the morning projects, we will celebrate with music, enjoy authentic Mexican lunch and have the opportunity to go swimming in the beautiful Caribbean sea.

You must be a PELP9 official event ticketed guest in order to attend this activity.
